Because it's easier to draw. If you look at cartoon characters, they are almost always a simplification of a person. If they have eyelashes, they only have a few, etc. It's just a continuation of that, I think.

As Nel said. It' just easier to draw. Sometimes cartoon characters with five fingers look weird and awkward.

My GF loves four fingers....and she thinks in cartoons too!
