  • Australia has juries for more serious crimes. The jurors are called up from the electoral register (it is a legal requirement that all citizens be registered to vote, so every citizen is a potential juror). The Crown and defence counsels make submissions to the judge about the suitability of the called-up jurors to provide a fair trial for the accused. Potential jurors can also plead to be excused by the judge, but only in extreme circumstances are they let off. Jurors are paid for their time and expenses, but not very much considering they may have to take time off work etc.
