  • Umm... what do you mean by synthetic? If you mean "can't survive on it's own, and only shows up when blasted with a jillion bigawatts", then I guess you have your wish, because that's pretty much what the big smashers are all about. If you mean the particle gets somehow *assembled* by man and is smaller than all other particles, that doesn't seem to make sense: how can other particles combine to produce something smaller than themselves? And of course the practical questions about the means for synthesis seem to be science-fictiony. So I guess I can't conceive of this scenario being so, nor do I see how it would have implications beyond being a weird factoid of science.
  • It's highly unlikely, but as Quantum Mechanics states, anything that could ever happen will happen and has happened. They say if you think you understand Quantum Physics, you really don't! Let's say, for curiousities sake, the smallest particle in exsistence WAS synthetic. Well, first off, by looking for a "particle" I'm asuming we are using the Standard Model of Physics to do it, if that is the case, than it's an infinite journey. Everytime physists try to look for somehting "smaller" mathamatically, they run into enless infinities and anomilies on the way. However, if they were to opt for String Theory approch, the math would be rid of such anomilies and the infinities would no longer get in the way of progress. My point is, is that there probably isn't a "smallest" unit of something, because the universe, accourding to String Theory, is made up of strings, and the vibration frequency of the strings determine the charachteristics of the matter they make up. All this is set in a 12 dimentional hyperspace, which we only realize 3 the forth dimention is actually time. ;]
