Always do it at the airports when you get to the country you are going to. That is where the best exchange rates are. So change your money when you get to New Zealand and do not change it back till you get back home. One other very important thing to note is that if you have a check card or credit card they will be very useful, but only if you call the card companies first. Let them know you are going out of the country so they dont put holds on your cards.

I found the best way is not to exchange dollars , but to use my credit card !!

Answering from NZ..........I'm sorry but Shooting4param is not quite correct, but nearly! Certainly you will be better off if you change your US$ to NZ$ here rather than in the US (I assume that's where you are but of course maybe wrong). The foreign exchange dealers at our airports have to pay huge lease fees to the airport authority - hence they charge a large commission on all exchanges (their advertised rate may be good but check their fees). The best rates available are at the ordinary high street banks, like Westpac, ANZ, BNZ and National Bank. Do not, whatever you do, change your US$$ in hotels. Watch your credit card too - all are accepted here, Visa Master etc, but you will pay a forex fee on EACH transaction. Cash or travelers cheques are best.
