  • Navy reserve is the same as any other branch. Certain ratings (Navy job classifications) are needed when the Navy is called up for an expanded mission, but not so much during the quiet times. A Navy reserve unit may have a dozen different specialties represented. It's just an admin organization; the whole unit does not get sent to the same ship when called up. You join, go to Boot, get your rating, come home, and do the monthly/annual drills. You may get called up to fill a slot in the Fleet or at a shore installation for an indefinite period of time. YMMV.
  • one weekend a month you go to reserve duty, once a year you go for a week! Your regular job has to let you off work and hold your job for you. It's a good thing, but you could get called to go to Iraq, even in the reserves.
