i^5 = i*i*i*i*i = ((i*i)*(i*i))*i = ((-1)*(-1))*i = 1*i = i So now it's 3/i How to divide by i? The way you do divisions with complex numbers is to multiply top and bottom of the fraction by the complex conjugate of the number. The complex conjugate of a+bi is a-bi The complex conjugate of i is -i So now you have 3*(-i) / (i*-i) which is -3i/1 which is -3i Now it is in a+bi form. a is 0 and b is -3.
