Yeah, I guess I should tone back on the "astounded" part. I'm still somewhat flabbergasted, though.
The category almost seems to invite litigation though, doesn't it? I mean, if you or I in the capacity of anonymous Internet ignoramuses give bad advice about someone else's found drug, what can anyone do about it? But if I were a deep pockets website owner providing a forum and a named category for us to do that in and archiving the messages ... I'd want to be sure as the site owner that my liability umbrella insurance policy was always paid up.
The "what's this pill" questions used to be a constant subject of debate on Answerbag when I started (late 2006). Everybody was speculating about who these people were and what made them tick. It seems like that chatter died down when someone suggested that it was mostly parents finding strange pills in their teens' things, and wondering what they were facing.
I kind of miss that argument. It's just such a catalyst for world-class wit and speculation.

Oh, I don't for a minute disagree with the concept of "what are the effects of this drug?" I think that's a necessary and useful Q & A.
No, what I mean is the anonymous and long distance identification process.
Wow I now have to admit that I misread the category. I totally agree with you, and I am disapointed that it even exists.

I'm not sure that you understood what I meant. I'm surprised that there is a category for anonymous people like us to identify for potential users "what is this pill?" (assuming that it's one that they might take, or one that they're concerned that it's a pill that a loved one might take / is taking / maybe should not take).
This kind of drug identification should be done only face-to-face with a professional (such as a pharmacist or physician) who at least can positively identify it by seeing it in person, and has a Physician's Desk Reference or equal guide. I'm not questioning "drugs and medicine" in general. That would be nonsensical.
Oh, sorry, but yeah i understand, its pretty funny because i asked a question very simular to yours, it was something like 'why is there non stop pill identifier questions, as if everyone on this site is some sort of doctor'.
