There was a death in someone's family at my place of employment. The other workers went around asking for 10-20 dollars from each person. I am incredibly sorry about this death but i cannot afford the money right now. Howto state this politely/discretley?
It`s one thing to ask for money it`s another entirely to ask for a certain amount. At my work they pass an envoloppe around and you can put whatever amount you want in, even nothing if you desire. People at work don`t know your personal or financial situation.
I would be rather offended if somebody at work asked me for any money whatsoever, and would not hesitate in telling them so.

Canadians (especially Quebec residents): What is your opinion of Pauline Marois, the PQ, and their stance about language?
It think it`s noble that Québecois want to protect their language and culture I just think they`re going about it all wrong. Outlawing language, when there is a need for it is not the way to go about things. If English is more important than French in the metropole then the French only have themselves to blame. They are their own worst enemy. No sense blaming the English for that.

Do the Germans of today have a better work ethic, or sense of civic responsibility, or willingness to submit to rules, or are they at least less likely to litter, than the average French or British person?
In a word, yes. The streets of both France and Britain are littered with garbage. Germany is so much cleaner than either of these countries. I still believe Germans are rather proud of their country, much more so than the British anyways. They also seem to follow rules more, and the basic local laws.

Beer gut question.
I am drinking too much beer and developing a large beer gut. I walk for 1 hour a day with no effect. How can I reduce my waist line without having to give up beer (or food)?
I always heard you have to shock your body. If you walk an hour everyday your body gets used to doing this and so you start taking in the necessary calories to continue this activity.
You have to do exercise your body isn`t used to doing. You probably also have to sweat quite a bit, no won`t sweat from walking an hour a day.

Who/What had influence on Napoleon Bonaparte, before he became an emperor?
I don`t know if it will be of any help but I understand that Napoleon was actually Italian, and spoke French with an Italian accent. He was always rather embarrassed by this and did his best to speak French like a French person. He was also rather small, almost a midget. So throughout his life he tried to compensate for these two shortcomings, his height and his foreign accent.

Is France's identity debate a call to the far right?
Well the far right in France never really went away since World War 2, it only went underground.
France collaborated with the Nazis, and even helped deport and exterminate undesirables, such as Jews and Gypsies.
This mentality exists now as it did 60 years ago, all over Europe. So maybe this is just this mentality once again rearing its ugly head.

Is your participation in physical activity/exercise something you choose to do (for fun) or something you feel you *have* to do (for health reasons)?
Both. I love being in the gym, the smell, the sound of the weights clanging, I feel really at home there. Also, if I din`t go, I'd probably weigh over 200 pounds. I love eating, but I have to constantly work out to burn off the calories.

Answer to:
In France, does the similar sound of the words au-dessus (above) and au-dessous (below) cause a lot of "What did you say? 'Above' or 'below'?"? (Except in French.) Just seems like a major language design flaw to me.
In French you would hear the difference. But there are many words with the same similarities, and you get used to the difference.
For example: Tu (you) and tous (all), it would be the same two different vowel sounds. Or vous (you again) and vu (seen), again the same two vowel sounds.
This happens quite frequently in French, so a French speaker gets used to hearing the two...

French speakers please ... In a piece on modes of transport, one section is called 'En Auto' and the other 'En Voiture'. In online translators these both come out as 'In a car', but they are clearly supposed to be different. Could somebody define diff.?
En auto and en voiture can both mean in a car, auto being a little more familiar. When talking about a car there is little difference between the two words.
Voiture CAN also be like a train wagon, when you take a train in France your ticket has the voiture number on it, and they are all numbered.

The worst thing in life in my opinion is to ask yourself what might have been. If you feel like doing something, do it, and take the consequences, either good or bad. Live with your decisions, it`s better than not making any at all.
I moved to Europe with nothing but a bag of clothes on my back, and ended up staying for years. They were the best years of my life and I made many friends....

Definitely get a steak pie and mash in a reputable pub, it is more than delicious. Also, if you can make it to Brick Lane in East London and get a decent curry. They are not expensive and are very good, authentic like from India. You cannot go to London without getting a fish and chips at least once. Also get a good fry up, with black pudding in the morning.

What tips can you give to help get through these hard times.
Without downplaying what you or anyone else is going through, these "hard times" are nothing compared to what some past generations have gone through.
Just do your best to cut down, and be thankful for what you DO have. Hopefully you still have a roof over your head and a meal to come home to at the end of the day.

I need to learn a paragraph of 9 lines in French for tommorow for an exam. What do you think is the best way to learn it. Repeated typing, reading, or writing it out?
Write it out on a piece of paper and just keep reading it and re-reading it. Anywhere you make mistakes or forget a part punish yourself by writing it out again. This is how I got ready for exams, and found it works quite well.

What is a humane way to remove mice that doesn't involve poisoning, drowning, electrifying or squishing them?
I had a mouse problem in my apartment for a while. I set traps. I killed a few but now there are no mice in my place.
It may be sad to have to kill a few mice but they learn quickly and apparently they leave.
I'd rather a few dead mice than having them eating and contaminating all my food.

Answer to:
Does the bible specifically state that Satan is somehow more powerful than other angels, former and current? If not, doesn't that make him a minor threat at best?
As far as I know Satan was an arch angel, and a very powerful one at that. He wanted to replace God, and didn't want to serve Him. Hence his famous saying, "beter to reign in Hell than serve in Heaven."
And he is definitely a threat, his greatest acheivement is having people believe that he does not exist.

Do I have to make eating healthy a habit in order to get use to that way of eating to stop craving unhealthy food like Burger King, McDonalds, and Wendy's?
If you go long enough without eating fast food, say six months to a year, and then you eventually eat it, you will find it disgusting, and it will make you sick.
Just try to eat other stuff for long enough and the last thing you will crave will be such unhealthy food.

LOL Well I can`t imagine anyone other than a Roman Catholic applying to be a priest. And the process is very long and vigorous anyways, I believe it takes up to seven years. Why do the French have the best toast and the best fries in the world?
The French don`t even really eat toast, the British are more apt to eat toast. It is actually rather hard to get toast in France. They DO eat melba toast sort of things, which are really tasty.
As for fries, the fries in France are usually hard and brittle, and not very good. The fries are much better in either Belgium or Holland.

And I would be careful too with addresses being posted on the internet like the other guy said, it`s a very bad idea.

My husband and I are both catholics since baptism. We have been married for 28 years by the Illinois Court. We have never married by church. Are we still allowed to receive Holy Eucharist. I have asked different parishes and they say no. Thank you
Probably not. You're marriage would not be recognized by the Church, therefore you and your husband have been living in sin for the past 28 years. You would have to get your marriage validated in the eyes of the Catholic Church, no easy task. You would obviously have to ask your parish priest for more details.

It would have to be pac-man. It was good in the day, but a little smiley yellow ball chomping about little pellets being chased by multi-colour ghosts looks very dated by today's standards. Then he eats a powerball, and gets to chase the ghosts. Every level is the same thing.
But in its day it was pretty good. We were easily entertained back then.

Do you see the catholic church changing it's policies on divorced couples? My girlfriend and i are catholic and our ex-spouses were not. Our ex spouses were the one's who wanted the divorces. Neither will give an annulment. So how do we receive communion
I don't get the *neither will give an anullment part.* It is not up to your ex spouses but up to the church to give an anullment. Were you and your girlfriend married in the Catholic Church the first time round? You should consider talking to your local priest, he would be more than happy to give you some sound advice.

The general image of a wiseman through entertainment and all is that of an old man sitting alone on top of some mountain. Where does that come from, how does being a hermit increase one's wisdom?
Amongst other things already mentionned, I believe it would have something to do with wise men being unable to suffer fools easily. Once you reach a height of wisdom, you cannot be round people with such lower levels of intelligence, you find it both annoying and embarrassing. This would factor into why wise men remove themselves from society in general.

Has anyone vacationed in Cap d'Agde, in the south of France recently? If so, what were your experiences and would you go back again?
I haven`t vacationed there per se but I stopped in at Beziers for the day, and went down to the Mediterranean. I found it lovely, and very warm. I would have liked to have spent more time there, to discover it more. It really does look like a nice, quiet part of France, and a great place to take a holiday.

I just lived this very scenario. I had a roommate and I wanted him to leave. Everything, including the lease, was in my name only. If you really want somebody out of your house, it can be easily done. You basically make the roommate realize it isn`t worth their while to butt heads with you, and that you hold all the power. At worse you can threaten to change the locks while the person is...

Well, Red Bull is illegal in France so if you bring it the locals really appreciate it.
Also, cheddar cheese is next to impossible to find, so brining a brick is a good idea.
You may also want to bring some of your own music. Although French music is good, unless you are French you probably won`t appreciate it.
Obviously a camera, because France is one of the nicest countries,...

I have a coworker who ended up in tears because she messed a job up. She is now acting like a victim, and with the manager we have, the blame is going to inevitably going to land on me and another coworker, am I being unreasonable for being annoyed?
What blame could possibly "land" on you? She messed up, not you? Did you do or say anything untoward to this co-worker? If you did then you have cause for concern.
If it was your place to say something and you did, then you should be fine. If it wasn`t your place, then take your place and leave it up to your manager to deal with the mess ups in the office next time.

If one or more Canadian provinces besides Quebec voted to secede, would the government resort to force to keep the country together?
I imagine so. I always heard a rumour that if the YES vote had succeeded in the 1995 Québec referendum the Canadian government had the military ready to intercede. Whether this is true or not I am not sure.
There is a pretty strong separatist movement out West, although I believe it has calmed down somewhat with the election of the Albertan cowboy Stephen Harper as leader of Canada.

I'm moving out after graduation. It'd be mean, but I can't help but think about leaving a note for my parents telling them that I never felt accepted by them. They don't accept my lifestyle. Do you think that'd make them change their ways,or just feel bad
I think putting distance between yourself and your parents would give you both, but especially you, a different perspective.
If you really want to say something to your parents, give it 3 to 6 months on your own first. You may regret soon after leaving the letter otherwise.
In life in general you learn to always leave on the best of terms, you will feel much better for it.

Traveling to Barcelona in mid to late Feb 09, would you recommend online reservation beforehand, or just finding a hotel upon arrival? any experiences appreciated.....
I used to rock up to towns in Europe wihtout reservations, and to be honest it is never a good idea. I was young and rather stupid at the time, and sleeping outside didn`t bother me much. I always took my chances. Sometimes I got a room, sometimes I didn`t.
If you really want to have a nice relaxing time without stress I would definitely reserve in advance.

My brother moved from South Carolina to Canada a number of years ago. He rented a UHAUL truck and drove it right to Canada. He left it with a UHAUL dealer in Canada for a small fee. It worked out really well. So if you wish to rent a small UHAUL and drive it to Canada it is definitely do-able.

Why do you think that Islam is the fastest growing religion in the world even though it is attacked in the media and propagandaised?
People are converting to Islam in droves so they will not be persecuted if and when Obama comes into power.

Does anyone in the English-speaking world read Asterix? Are there any Asterix-readers from other countries?
My library where I grew up had lots of Asterix and Obelix comics, I read most of them. There were always lots of Tintin comics as well, and I enjoyed reading them as well.

What is your computer on? The classic computer desk, a table, the floor, bricks and boards, your bed, or is it a laptop maybe?
I have a laptop. I usually sit in my lazy boy reclining chair, with it on my lap.
When I am feeling really lazy I go lie on my bed with it. I can usually be found in either of these places with it.

What is the warmest place you have ever lived?
South of France, during the heatwaves of 2003 and 2004. Thousands upon thousands of people died throughout Europe during these "canicules" or heatwaves.
