Answer to:
Should parents who "Abuse" their children by teaching them to be highly racist, homophobic, etc. be treated the same way as those who beat and molest their children, or should their right to raise their kids according to their bigoted views be respected?
Sadly, parents can legally raise kids with those philosophies as long as no action breaks a law. As far as their bigoted views, I wouldn't use the word repected. But I do agree that it is a type of abuse.

I'm 42 and I want laser vision. Time to accept that you are likely as tall as you are going to get and I will never have laser vision. There are surgeries that I've seen on the Discovery Channel where they can lengthen your legs, but it takes years, is very painfull, and REALLY expensive. Most doctors will likely send to you see a therapist so you can learn to accept yourself.

Not all liberals are against the death penalty, just as all conservatives are not anti-choice when it comes to abortion. Even though part of me wants to jump on the "what about family values, abstinance, etc" thing, it really isn't an issue for many reasons. How is it, at this late stage in the US election campaign, that there are still Americans who know nothing about Barack Obama? We, in Australia, practically know his shoe size.
Singwell, the sad truth is that most Americans are so focused on the latest celebrity baby and what ringtone a politician has, that Americans have the attention span of a flea. No, inanimate objects cannot have intent and therefore cannot be killers. They could be weapons or tools of harm. They could even be an accidental cause of death or injury. But it takes an action to be a killer.
I also think they save life and limb at a much higher rate than they create injury or death.

Human greed will always create damage and destruction. Drilling for oil will not show any results for 10-20 years. So we will be charged for the cost of test and development at the pump. There is no way to know the environmental damage. All it takes is one "oops" from an oil company and a slap on the wrist fine to contaminate a river or lake.

First, take your trigger finger off of the trigger, and point your finger straight ahead. Why do people shun Paedophiles? I hear that if you go to jail because of that “crime” you are sure dead meat to hardened criminals. I’M NO PAEDOPHILE, but want to know what is so disgusting about it that even other criminals hate it?
Quite simple, most people, no matter how evil have two lines you don't cross. You don't "F" with kids or animals. A lot of prisons now have programs where they bring in stray cats and the hardest inmates turn to mush to take care of them. In my personal rule book of life, if I catch you messing with a kid, animal or woman, be prepared to have the unholy wrath released upon you.

In a Family Guy episode Stewie is going through pancake withdrawls and he sees himself climing on the wall and his head spins 180 degrees. What is this a reference to?
Trainspotting. When the guy is locked in his room going through heroin withdrawls he starts to halucinate. One of his halucinations is a baby crawling up the wall onto the ceiling and it spins it's head around staring down on him. Rather disturbing scene, but well done.

What does Stewie sing at the end of the family guy intro song? Is it Laugh and Cry or F'ing Cry?
My wife and I have debated this many times, and even replayed it over and over (TiVo). We still are not sure. We have pretty much come to the conclusion that it is written as "laugh and cry", but he blurs the lyrics while singing just to create the question as...

The stalk is the best part (personal opinion). They are crisp and tasty. I like to rip the leafy part off and make that the base of the salad, and either chop the stalks into bits and add to the salad, or even better, grill them with some balsamic. Any Romaine stalks you have left over, send them my way!

Generally when you purchase a replacement dishwasher, installation is included. If it's a new dishwasher, meaning power an dplumbing needs to be run, expect an additional $250-$400 for the runs and connections. We just replaced ours and I connected it myself. They are really quite easy to do.

Good question. Simply stated. I personally feel that when the body dies, that's it. Your matter and energy is dispersed. You will not achieve peace, you will meet nothingness. You will be dead. We started during the Carter Administration when he had solar panels installed and functioning on the white house. Then came Reagan who canceled the project and had the panels removed from the white house.

No, they are a soverign nation. They are not a direct threat to the US. We would be attacking, unprovoked a nation that has every international right to exsist and build arms for defense. You need to report this. The next of kin will be liable for those charges, and the last thing a next of kin needs at a time like this is additional burdon. Ohio passed a new Independence day law that says if a "suspected" drunk driver refuses to take a breath test the police can take said drive to the hospital for a forced blood test. Does this violate the drivers right to an unreasonable search and seizure
First, driving is a privilage and not a right. You have to be licensed to do it. You are using public property if you are driving on the roads. When you sign for your license, read the fine print. If you are being pulled over for suspicion, they now have probable cause. If it is a random check point, you have to submit, and if you refuse, they now have probable cause.

Instead of charging me for my luggage....can't you just charge me more for my flights?
Two reasons, first: they can advertise low fares (as long as you use only carryon), and two: there are hidden fees everywhere that are not listed. The last ticket I paid for cost about $150, but had about $70 is hidden taxes, costs, fees, etc.
The big problem with this, is that more people are going to use carryon which is already over crowded as is. Next they will start charging for carryon.

You need to discuss this with a doctor. A condition as serious as you are talking about is not something you should be asking opinions about.

If I have led a truly healthy life, am happy, purposeful, spiritual and am accident free, will genetics determine how long I live? Or is there another factor?
One key factor that is impossible, is to have the magical ability to control all that everyone and everything around you does.
Someone driving a car could sneeze, lose control, run into a lamp post that goes through a store front window and as you are walking by are distracted, and fall into an open manhole.

Does restricting your calories by half of the amount you need daily allow you to live longer, as studies are showing?
No, it will make you sick. If you physically NEED X amount of calories, and you consume X/2, you are no longer consuming the NEEDED number of calories to sustain your current health. So if you are healthy, and you have identified your caloric intake needs, you will be able to sustain your health. Keep in mind, that the number of calories NEEDED will change day to day.

What is seattle like in all aspects?
In all aspects? That is a wide open question. We have about 700,000 in Seattle proper, about 3 million in the immediate Puget Sound, and I think about 5.5 million in the Greater Puget Sound. From Seattle you can be in mountains in an hour and to the Pacific in about 3 hours. And the Puget Sound is right here. We have two primary lakes and some of the longest floating bridges in the world....

Sometimes when I am travelling I will. Now that you can pause them, rewind, etc (kind of like TiVo light) it's nice to relax and see some stupid comedy that I know my wife wouldn't want to watch. They are usually about $6, and much easier than trying to find a theatre in a strange town. The last one was some Adam Sandler movie. It was so good, I don't even remember the name.

It's a self generating war. We attacked, people defending their land were labeled as "insurgents" and we had to supress them while we proved that there were no WMD. Once we proved that the US invaded under a false pretense, the "insurgents" were renamed "terrorists" so the Bush administration could say that we are fighting a war on "terrorists". The...

There are several concepts of "super computers". If you are talking about distributed processing, then you can get software like Oracle 10g. There are also versions of DB2 and a few other databases that can work with that method. However, most supercomputing designs are created for specialized uses, and require a lot of custom code.

Do you think that the fact Obama's stepfather is Asian-American, and that McCain has killed Asians (in Vietnamese) will affect the way Asian-Americans will vote this November?
His father was born and raised in Kenya, then lived in the Pacific rim for awhile. I'm not sure how that makes him Asian American. Considering he met his wife (Obama's mother) in Kansas, then they moved to Hawaii where Obama was born. When his parents seperated, Obama and his Mom moved to Jakarta for a bit, while his father moved to Connecticut (still missing the Asian American...

We have a 10 year old American Cocker with the longest eyelashes I've ever seen on a dog. Just one look and you know she is a girl. As to being spoiled. . oh yeah. We took her on a week trip to a cabin, and one day we drove into a small town for lunch. We sat outside the cafe, and she hopped up in the chair and sat all prim and proper. We ordered some cheese fondue with rye for dipping....

Your question is rather extreme. Using the words "always" and "never" basically eliminate any other possibility. Also, some people (male and female) enjoy being by themselves, not out of hatred, just out of personal preference of a lifestyle.

Have you ever taken a wine-tasting course?
My wife and I took an 8 week course about red wines of southern Italy several years back. During the second session, the class pretty much divided between the snobs that spit the wine out, and the fun people that swallowed the wine. Each taste was about 1/8th of a glass, so no one got drunk. But by the end of each class, we were having more fun than the snobs.

First, we need to establish what kind of biting it is. Is it clamping and agressive bite, or is it s soft holding onto you with it's teeth. Cats hug each other by holding on gently with teeth. If that is what your cat is doing, it's a sign of love. If it seems agressive, do not jerk your hand away, a gentle tap on the nose and say in a clear stern (but not too loud) voice...

Specifically, Lenny Horowitz from the south end of the Bronx. He and his buddy Vinnie were bowling, and divided the average time it took the ball to strike the pins by two. This became the second. Between rounds, they figured that it took about 60 of the ball rollings to get a beer, so when Lenny asked Vinnie to get a round of beers, Vinnie said "back in a minute" hence the timing of...

What do you call those plastic package of fluid hanging on a supportive stand in the hospital that the doctor use to inject a patient with the fluid through a tube? What are they used for?
Ringer's Lactate I think is the correct name of the IV bags. There are a few different mixes, but basically they are bags of saline with different electrolytes. They have two main purposes. First is to maintain hydration of the body, and second act as a delivery method for additional medications. If you look at the hose, there are several rubber knobs sticking out if it for syringes.

Is there any scientific merit to the theory of intelligent design?
Intelligent Design is not a theory. It has not even made it to hypothisis yet. Actually, there are so many variations that no single thesis has been agreed upon in the religious circles. As soon as a unified thesis is presented for open scientific review and testing, then and only then could any merit be considered.

Answer to:
Finally and for everyone: Define the word scientific theory.
A theory is the third step in scientfic validation. First, someone or a group create a thesis of something (let's say "paper burns". This thesis has to be released in it's whole to the entire scientific community. It is independantly tested and retested. Someone comes back and says "we have double blind proof that this type of paper does not burn". The thesis has...

My favorite way to eat turnips is to cube them, along with celeric and rutabgas. Get them nice and soft slowly drizzle in vegetable broth and lots of dill while making a soup with an immersion blender.

Not a car airbag though. I did see a 5 car pile up, and there was a girl in the middle. Her airbag didn't deploy until she got out of the car. Something right out of a comedy (everyone was OK). The cause of the accident was also amusing. A septic tank rolled off of a semi on the freeway.

No, checkin time means the eariest you can check in. That is the time you start paying for the room. If the hotel is overbooked, then the reservations are held on a first come first serve basis. But with the frequency of business travel, it's usually not a problem. I've checked in at midnight that night (9 hours after checkin time) and not had a problem.

Electical Conductivityof platinum and Gold when I looked them up we were dealing with different units . looking to see which is a better choice for a ring that someone would wear that works with electricity every day.
If they are working with high voltage, they will be required for safety reasons, to remove it and any other jewelry. It's not just the conductivity, there is also a chance that the ring could get caught on something. Even a low voltage shock to the hand will make a person pull their hand back quickly.
Don't take offense if they remove thier ring for work.

People opposed to gay marriage claim that it destroys the sanctity of God created institution. On the other hand we're told that Africans (for e.g.) didn't know about God before missionaries came to Africa. But there were already families then. Why?
If marriage is a god created institution, does that mean that my civil marriage is not valid to people who believe that? There are some religious people that believe that marriage is for procreation. My wife and I are not having children. Is that another reason my marriage would not be considered valid? Marriage and relationships are about love, not religion.

I respectfully disagree. This is a great site for exchanging ideas, concepts and information. The problem is when people are abusive, mean or use questionable language. Another problem is that as the site grows, the number of abusive and mean people grows. There are also people that get on and just try to stir up trouble. I've talked to some great people here that I disagree with in their...

I don't recall the name of it (I keep it at home), but it's an antianxiety med that is fairly new.
Interesting bit of info, there are studies being done currently of enzyme patterns in people so that soon they will be able to test a person to fit the best med for them. I was talking with my shrink about this just a couple of days ago. He said that it could be as soon as five...

What do you think about having a destination wedding. IE: a wedding at Disney land, a resort, Vegas, or another country? Is it better than a local wedding that can be attended by all your kin?
My wife and I chose to get married as far away as we could. So we got married by a Registrar in Edinburgh Scottland. Her parents flew out for it. We didn't send wedding "invitations" we sent out wedding "announcements". Her parents were the witnesses. It was a nice, quiet and simple wedding. There was no theme other than "we are getting married in Scotland, if you...

Is it better to leave a computer (desktop) on all the time or better for the computer to turn it off?
Depends on the type of components and the purpose of the computer. Most home systems are designed to run about 8 hours per day. Servers are designed to run 24 hrs a day.
I worked on a server cluster that had run non stop for just over 13 years. We had spare parts for everything because we knew something would fail after shutting it down and bringing it back up. When we brought it back up,...

Why do scientists dismiss unnatural selection in our past when it is what we do everyday in our present?
Unatural selection has been present for awhile. Human breeding of dogs, cats, cattle, grains, etc are unatural selection. These have to be dismissed as they are caused by human interaction. However in a humanless world, we wouldn't have many of the breeds of animals or plants we have. I'm not saying it's good or bad, I'm just saying that humans have altered the natural process.

Someone told me hat its a mans duty to go to war-what, then, is a womans duty?
It is no persons (male or female) duty to go to war. War is a horrible thing. The concept of the "romance" of fighting in a war is complete and pure crap. Being in combat will test and show a person who they really are, both the best and worst of who they are. Gender has nothing to do with it. The concept of the duty only applies if the person fighting is really defending their...

I was on a business trip to Boston, and there was a thunderstorm so bad they had to close down the airport. I got stuck in the airport for about 8 hours, had a late night layover in Minnesota, so I had to find a hotel, got about 4 hours of sleep and a quick meal, and finally got home about two days after I was supposed to get home. That was the worst trip I can think of.

Do what you want to (as long as you don't hurt yourself or anyone else, and as long as you are of legal age). Focus on the long term. Modeling doesn't last long, and singing careers are difficult to get into. I wish the best for you in whatever you choose, but with those two fickle career paths, make sure you have a secondary career to fall back onto.

A stick of dynamite thrown up into the air explodes and the force of the explosion causes it's matter to expand in all directions at the same speed - that expanding matter has a centre, which is the point of explosion. Is it not so with the Universe?
A stick of dynamite will not create equal force in all directions due to the shape of the stick. A perfect ball of dynamite will create an equally distibuted force in all directions.
Answer to:
Does wine always get better with time or can it be too old?
White wines tend to not last as long as reds when resting (storage). And there is always the potential of contamination that will destroy a wine over time. So you could take two bottles of the same wine, same vintage if they were stored in different ways or if one of the bottles was contaminated, one could be great and the other vinegar.

My experience in the UK, they initially tend to keep to themselves until you engage them, then they open up and become your best friend and will do anything to help you.

These are also designed to reduce the speed of the bullet so the sonic "crack" is no longer there. There are types that disipate the gas after it leaves the barrel so the bullet will have achieved full muzzle velocity and are...

If I sent you out into the wilderness with a bag of tools how successful would you be at living a comfortable life?
You could drop me pretty much anywhere (except extreme cold), and I would be fine. I already have my emergency pack ready along with two duffle bags. By that time I would have a feel for the land, what resources were available, and be able to live...

Interview tip, never tell them what you are making. They almost always ask, turn the question around and answer with the question "what is the salary range this position offers, and what is the potential for growth in the position".
Interviews are like playing poker, keep a smile on your face, but never let them know what you have.

That is like asking if someone likes to cook with herbs. There is such a variation of wines, herbs, cooking styles, bases, etc, that there is no simple answer. Most stirfrys I like to use rice wine, some red pasta sauces go with vermouth, some soups go great with a splash of dry sherry, and for rarebit you have to use the darkest beer you can find. It all depends on what you are going for.

The entire US, no. The US is made up of so many microcosms that have become expectant and reliant on each other, as well as the entire world. If you go back in history, the microcosms were self sustaining. Then as the population grew, and the government formalized, there was more reliance on other microcosms. Would you "attend" your own funeral? why or why not?
No, I already have the plans and intent to be cremated, so there would be no funeral. I don't want my friends and family to mourn. I want a good solid wake where everyone celebrates the life that I had. And it would be interesting to be at the wake. I'm sure that there would be laughing and crying. Lots of hugs and kisses. Rememberance of the dumb-ass, life changing, person I am.

Minorities, nobody can deny the discrimination that you have experienced. If a white guy were to emigrate to your native land, would he be treated any different there than you are here?
As a white American male, I have experinced discrimination in the US. There is a lot of racial tension in many areas of this country. And though I understand the history and background of the reasons, at some point all people need to move on. I've been harrassed about black slavery (but my family background didn't come to the US until the late 1800s), I've been harrassed about...

How do you text in school with out the teacher knowing?
You are in school to learn. The tax dollars I pay go to schooling, not for social time or cheatin on tests.
If there is a critical issue, tell your techer that you need to step out of the room. And critical does not mean "do you think so and so is cute" or "So and so thinks I'm cute".
Answer to:
When people say "America isn't ready for a black president", or "America isn't ready for a female president", are they really just reflecting what they personally believe, not what the country believes?
What they are saying is only a personal perspective. It would be similar to me saying that America is not ready for diet cherry coke. There are a minority that have a biased or dislike for it, but the majority doesn't care. As long as everyone is treated equally, jobs are available, people are able to provide for themselves and family.

My vets recommend only small amounts of tuna at a time. Albacore is very fatty and there is evidence that it contains increased levels of mercury. I would go with crutches. I've had several leg surgeries and I find that the best crutches (for me) are the ones that brace around your fore arms and have the handles sticking forward. Not sure what they are called. But I like them better than the under arm types.

If you have only 4-5 hours sleep over a 3 day period, how does this affect you?
It will mess you up. I've done it too many times. First you start hearing things. Then you start seeing things out of the corners of your eyes. Then your logic starts failing. I've gone three days without sleep, then slept for about four hours, and was up for another two days. Don't do it. It will alter your judgement.
