When you log in to Answerbag, do you ever wish that
It would be nice if I didn't have to wait so long to find something worth my time, and my time is pretty cheap. I'm not sure when the contest to prove who can be the lamest AB member started, but I do remember that the questions on the homepage were not always so insipid. The fact is that most people here are the type who, if you know two things about them, then you can guess the third, and...

Do you agree that the "debate" over Evolution vs. Creation will soon be ended by overwhelming evidence?
I don't at all doubt the denier's ability to deny. As it is, I would consider the present amount of evidence for evolution to be well past overwhelming, yet people still deny it. It doesn't matter how much evidence there is if the deniers refuse to hear it.

How did the History Channel morph into Conspiracy and Crank Theory Central? (Not to mention the unending parade of X-job 'reality' shows.)
That's what people want to watch, I suppose. The trouble is that there's not much history that people are entertained by. If it's not World War II or Ancient Egypt then most people don't care. Plenty of people are into weird supernatural crap, though, whether it's aliens or predictions from some dead French as*****. I must say, Ancient Aliens is very entertaining, although most of the...

What, in your opinion, caused the Civil War?
Slavery. It is common today for people to say that it was about states rights or economic issues, but those people, in my opinion, are only trying to ignore slavery. I mean, what right were the Southern states concerned about? The right to own slaves. What was the economy of the South based around? Chattel slavery. Even beyond that, if you look at what the secessionist missionaries talked about...

Do you ever think about what humankind has lost by destroying civilizations and/or forcing massive cultural change upon them?
When talking about cultures like this, it is often a good idea to think of cultures as species. What you're talking about is basically the loss of memes, or the loss of ideas, practices, and perspectives specific to a certain culture. When two...

I did that mostly when I was a few years younger, when I was attempting to form my own theology. I never strayed too far from Catholicism, though.

Answer to:
What is the best argument against democracy?
The people who make up the democracy, as a whole, are invariably incompetent. Whether it is because they do not have time in their lives to keep themselves informed or because they are simply stupid, the vast majority of them do not have what it takes to understand the workings of the government or what would be best for the state in either domestic or foreign affairs.

Oh, I always avoid doing that by never barking up any trees. It is not difficult for me to assume that no tree up which I might bark would be the right one. While that's certainly not completely true, I have no interest in pushing my luck. Even if I did get lucky, the whole situation would probably go badly somehow, because my involvement in things tends to do that.

Some see science as an absolute truth, a final answer, can science be considered a god??
Science is a method - created and performed by humans - which is used to discern truth, and its effectiveness is reliant on the people involved in process. I really can't see how something like that can be a god. It's not a being. It doesn't create or destroy. It's just a useful tool.

Not that I can think of. I have seen an actor in a movie portray a scientist who used "carbon-14 dating" to date a bronze statue to the future, but I guess that's not quite the same thing.

I'm not wearing green or getting drunk. I am of ostentatiously Irish stock, and while I am diminutive in stature, I'm not a leprechaun. There's a new episode of ponies this afternoon, so I'll be doing that. I'll probably continue doing that for several hours.

Pointless.
I mean, what was the price of his crucifixion, exactly? Zero, right? I mean, you can't really kill him. He even came back a few days later. If God was going to pay a price for our benefit that meant something, a part of him would had to have been destroyed forever. As it is, he just put on a big play when he could have done the same thing without the theatrics.

Science itself, as it is a method by which things are discovered and explained, naturally destroys wonder and mystery. However, it's rare for a discovery or explanation to not expose further mysteries, if indeed that is ever the case. When light is shed on something, you can no longer wonder what it looks like, but that light will only cast shadows elsewhere.

Why do so many inept politicians think they have the right stuff to be the leader of a country? Do they really believe it or just pretend?
The culture of the United States is one of believing that you can do anything, and that when people try to tell you that you can't, it's only further proof that you can. It's not really their fault entirely; we are all to blame for fostering that mindset.

Why do liberals always believe government knows better?
Well, they don't always. Not even most of the time. Perhaps never.
Liberals (at least the smarter ones) understand that government is like fire: if will keep you warm and cook your food, but if you're not careful it will burn your house down. It's both potentially useful and potentially dangerous. It would be stupid not to make use of it, but it would be equally stupid to expect it to control...

As extensive as I need it to be. Often, a situation does not really warrant very thorough research, and I'm not going to go out of my way if I don't want or need to. I'm willing to exhaust every source available if I have to, however. I have to do that right now, in fact, for a paper. for me it was history and PE.
I always hated the religion classes in both of the religious schools I went to. In the Evangelical school, it was called "Bible class," and in the Catholic school it was simply called "Religion." They were both boring and ultimately pointless for me. Even if I didn't become an atheist, they still would have been pointless. I've learned more about Christianity by myself than in any class.

Why do people in the UK say "Lego," while in the US we say "Legos?" I mean, that's something that is very clearly plural, since it's something concrete. Why don't people in the UK get that right?

Probably because people tend to think of Islam as a specifically Arab religion, even though it isn't. Also, even if people do recognize the non-Arab Muslims, they still see Islam as a religion of Asians and Africans; basically, dark-skinned people. In the US, attacks on Islam frequently come coupled with racist attacks on Muslims.

For as long as I've been here, and probably for some time before that, this site has been a lot about how sarcastic or snippy you can be, rather than about how helpful you can be. It's like that on most sites, of course, and it's only gotten worse as those virtues are now held up as the true qualifiers of a successful life. How is it coherent to say, on the one hand, that God has a divine plan, and on the other, to claim that we each have free will?
Unless the plan is for us to have free will and do whatever we want, it doesn't make any sense. Really, it's only a problem if you assume that God is omniscient and knows what's going to happen. Free will cannot truly exist in with that.

My has played the drums since he was a kid, my brother plays guitar, and I can play the piano and write my own music. My sister does graphic design, and unlike me or my brother, she's actually been acknowledged for her creative endeavors by winning an award for a poster she made for school. I just got an A in music theory, which isn't nearly as impressive.

The reason why many cultures throughout history preferred men is complex, too complex for me to give an answer to. I don't even know most of the reason, honestly. I can say safely that humans have pretty much always known that new humans come from females. We'd have to be pretty stupid to not realize that. There are lots. My favorite is quid pro quo, because when you say it you seem smart, and 50% of the people you are with are guaranteed to not know what you're talking about. Some of them might recognize it from Silence of the Lambs, at least.
It means a reciprocal exchange, and the Latin basically means "something for something." Literally, it is "what for which."

Actually no, that's not true. People just don't like my contributions because they are morons. In evolutionary terms, why do human beings like music and dancing?
Artistic expression is a part of culture, which is something humans have been able to develop as an adaptive tool. Culture also includes traditions and technology, and all of these things together basically allow humans to "evolve" without the need for evolution. Specifically, early humans used art (including music and I assume dancing as well) in the same way you might imagine them using...

It's basically true, I suppose. I would say that many, if not most religious people are content to have a conclusion without bothering to find facts. They don't need to prove it to themselves, and if they're secure in their own beliefs they won't need to prove it to anyone else.

Well, Call of Duty is a game. It's something you can do for hours without really moving at all. It's a'might different from actually being in the military. Believe it or not, people who play video games almost always have a decent understanding that the game is not like real life. I know this goes against conventional thought, but it's true.

The world, itself, could be any or all of those things at any given time. How one perceives it, however, is the decision of the individual. No need for any of that, I can brainwash my kids from anywhere all by myself. I don't have to take them to a haunted house and let them listen to a schizophrenic for an hour like theists do.

Why isn't the word 'red' read like the word 'blue?' There is probably a reason, but it is so pointless as to be meaningless. That's just the way we say it, and that's the word we picked for it. Tracing the origins of such things is not only not worth the time, but it's likely impossible.

Why is humanity the only species that "evolves"?
You're talking about technology, which requires culture, which is a huge advancement that, as far as we know, only we have. You seem to be thinking about evolution in a very simplistic way too, in that evolution is progression towards a technologically advanced society. It's not, that's just the path humanity took. Other lineages took other paths, and now they're having to compete with us.

You want to stop feminism by taking away women's rights? You want to rethink that one, perhaps?
And you're missing the point of rights too. They are not privileges, so they cannot simply be taken away. That women did not have those rights for so long was an injustice, so that they eventually received them was not an act of benevolence by men.

There is really nothing in evolution that says that humans should not exist because there are still monkeys or apes, so you can drop that notion. As to the question of why there are not multiple species of humans, that's because there's really only room for one, and barely that. Any groups that branched off were killed or assimilated, but destroyed either way.

What would you like to say to people who comb through your profile looking for things to use against you just to have the "upper hand"?
I used to put negative quotes from other people on this site there to poke at that tendency. Really, it's a waste of time, because no one is going to get the upper hand on me from my profile, because no one thinks less of me than myself. Unless, of course, they want to make fun of how I look. That's why I don't have any pictures anymore.

Why are most men better then most women at video games
It's the amount of practice they get, and that's really the only factor. Me and my sister play lots of video games, and we're just as good as any man. Most girls don't play video games anywhere near as much as we do, so of course they're not going to be good at it.

Is it fair to describe a liberal as someone who would hold a funeral for a goldfish while tossing a human fetus in a landfill?
Only if it's also fair to say that conservatives are people who want to protect fetuses so that they can grown up to be dead soldiers. I'd say that's a fairer description, since liberals have a wide variety of positions and beliefs, and conservatives tend to all think alike, only varying in degree.

Atheist: Was is not the bible who stated the universe is expanding?
That doesn't sound like the universe is expanding. It sounds like God is stretching out the sky so that we can live under it like a tent. I should point out that there is no evidence that the sky is anything like a tent or a curtain.

If God wishes to have mercy on my beleaguered soul, that's his decision. I would advise you, however, to not use the fear tactic. Most atheists are so because they were not gullible morons who fall for that sort of thing.

I can't imagine how slang could have anything to do with the economy. I mean, can you think of a connection, or were you just asking if we knew of any?
Anyway, slang is not an inherently bad thing. Languages evolve with the culture, which is why trying to read English writing from 300 years ago is almost like reading a different language. The words that are slang today will become proper,...

Are you the type of atheist who thinks there isn't enough evidence God exists? Or, the type that thinks God simply can't possibly exist?
I'm the first kind. I'm open to believing in a god if I had enough evidence. I mean, I used to believe in one, I just changed; I used to be okay with faith, now I want to know. When it comes to the question, I have an agnostic viewpoint, because I don't know. And, since I don't know, I don't believe, which makes me an atheist.

Many Americans think they won WWII. Are they aware that 3/4 of German fatalities died on the Russian front?
You can blame that on the Cold War. The Soviets were the real winners in the European theater, and the main battlefield was the Ostfront. The Soviet generals were better than the other Allies' generals too. Stalin made a lot of bad decisions, like his pre-war purges of the military and trusting Hitler, but he also made some good ones, like moving his factories to Siberia. Of course, the Soviets...

For those who can read music, music sheets make sense. For those who cannot, they mean nothing. Do you think that this is a good analogy?
No, it's not a good analogy. The main problem with it is that you are forgetting that many atheists once were believers themselves. You're idea that atheists just don't get it because they don't have the motivation to attempt to get it doesn't fit with someone who was a theist at one time. They understand what it means to have that kind of belief.
This analogy works just as well in reverse,...
