Thrifty Car Rental company is currently owned by the holding company Dollar-Thrifty Automotive Group, a company formed in 1990 by the Chrysler Corporation. The company has operated franchises and franchise-support services throughout its history, and has grown to become one of the most-recognized brands in car rental companies in the U.S. and Canadian markets. The company merged with Dollar Rent a Car Systems in 1989 to form the Dollar-Thrifty brand.

Size and Locations

    As of 2009, Dollar and Thrifty Car Rental operate 1,475 corporate and franchised stores around the globe, and 836 of these stores and service booths are located in the United States and Canada. Dollar Thrifty Automotive Group employs 6,800 managers, customer service agents and other positions, and the majority are located in North America. Forty-six percent of Thrifty's retail outlets in North America are franchised and owned by independent businesses that are granted licenses and rights to use Thrifty technologies and marketing materials.
