Who Should Get Tested?

    If you have any unusual symptoms such as pain or rashes, and have had sexual intercourse, you should consult a doctor right away to check for STDs. When you have these symptoms is not simply the only time you should get tested, however. Some STDs have no symptoms at all and can cause significant harm if not treated early on. If you have had sexual intercourse without using a condom, or if you have had more than one partner, you should have a regular check-up once a year. This will insure that you are healthy, and your doctor can give you advice on how to avoid contracting an STD in the future.

What is the Test for STDs Like?

    Doctors test you differently depending on which STDs for which you may be at risk. Your appointment will start with a discussion of your sexual history and how many new partners you have had. This will help the doctor decide which tests you may need to take. Some common STDs can be tested for by swabbing the area to collect a sample of the cells there or through a urine test. Other STDs may require a blood test. Your doctor may use more than one type of testing to determine your results.

Where Can You Get Tested?

    Planned Parenthood centers are helpful places to go and get tested for STDs or pregnancy. They specialize in these services and try to make these tests available to anyone. If you cannot find one in your area, talk to your doctor. They may be able to recommend another doctor, or help you find one you can afford. If you have insurance, your insurance company can give you a list of doctors with whom you are covered for services.
