Yes, definitely read the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Very good book. The books that follow are good to, but not as good as the first, and not really as vital to read as the first.
The recent movie is very good to, but there's a lot in the book that just didn't translate into the movie.

the movie was pathetic compared to the book.
almost ALL of the humor in the book lies with how the author expresses his ideas.
that can't be translated into a movie

The Hitchhiker's Guide plays with the tropes of (pop) science fiction, but is not itself science fiction.
