I've answered a similar question honestly before and I think I've come across as a bit cold. The simple answer is that I'd always but my family first. If i could help someone else without risk to my children then I would do so. If i had no responsiblities I'd probably risk my life far more readily.

I've step in the middle of fights between grown men when working in the licensing trade and even been thumped in the process, but I know I've prevented a far greater injury to the victim. I've done that because in that situation my children are safe and taken care of. However, if i was walking down the street and I had to let go of my child to rescue someone else I wouldn't and couldn't do it regardless of the instinct to help.
