Nice answer. OT - completely out of curiosity, why did you put quotation marks around the word "possibly"?
by Jodie44 on May 27th, 2007
They're asterisks, for emphasis.

Ahhh. Of course. I don't know why I failed to get that, except it was 6am and I was half asleep! Thanks, LOL.

They are a bit hard to tell apart, but it's always better than typing all caps.

You think? I'm not sure I agree, but no biggie. Here's my take, for what it's worth: There's no ambiguity with all caps. People ALWAYS know what THAT means, LOL. OTOH, I thought the asterisks were quotation marks and assumed you used the word "possibly" (above), tongue-in-cheek or sarcastically, and I couldn't figure out why. Hmmmm. I guess I've simply never seen asterisks used for emphasis. Interesting, and thanks for explaining.

True, it is an unusual useage, I've just always thought that all caps looked a bit vulgar.
But hey, I guess asterisks are kind of form of ovr function in that case, but they're just how I learnt to do it, no idea *Where* I picked it up, but I did.

I'm glad you explained! Darkling said ** are very common in chatting. I tried it on gmail chat and it works like a charm. I 'm always the last to know about everything, LOL
