Help answer this question below.

What do you think about this statement.."It is smarter to bet that God exists and to believe in him because if it turns out he is real, you win everything; if he is not, you lose nothing. So why not take the leap of faith?"

    first off, i'm a Christian.

    but i'm not sure i fall in line with that form of 'do or die' reasoning. simply because faith is something that evolves and grows over time, and it's not a commitment that one should make lightly. remember Christ's parable about the rich young ruler? yeah. giving that kind of control (read: all) over your life to Jesus Christ is not something that one should do so flippantly. american Christianity these days advertises all flowers and sunshine and happiness, ignoring all the places where Christ said we would suffer for His name. God is not a cosmic santa claus. He's our Father, and thus looks after us, but sometimes that means suffering. it's not just some thing that you jump into. it takes careful thought, reasoning, and seeking in order to build a faith that is strong enough to withstand the trials of life. this kind of 'advertising' campaign really doesn't sit well with me, because that's simply what it is. people shouldn't take the chance that they're wrong, but they also need to know what it costs them to come to salvation, and that God does ask for everything. it's freeing, and it's the most wonderful relationship that anyone can ever know, and it only stands to get better, but it does mean work and growth and change and turning away from the old life, and sometimes God allows us to go through very very challenging times in order to grow our faith, and people need to understand that. faith built upon fear of hell/death doesn't get one very far, i've observed.
