It would be helpful to know what OS ( Win 98,ME, XP, Vista or Win 7) and also helpful to know exactly what you're asking here. You shouldn't get explorer showing it's ugly head for example, when you click on a .pdf file or a .exe file. Not by default anyway so as far as files go you need to be a little more specific. It means the file associations on your PC have been messed with. Fixing it can be dramatically different between win 98 and XP for example so that's why knowing what OS would be helpful. It's a bitch to find in win 98 but easy in XP and above.

If you're currently using firefox or some other browser and a page opens in explorer instead, that will be because you haven't set firefox or your other browser as the default browser.
If it's firefox you're using, I can help there. In firefox tool bar at the top, go to tools, options, advanced. The first tab should be "General". Look down and see the box asking about checking to make sure firefox is default on start up? Make sure that box is checked.
