When filling out a job application , what should someone put in the salary desired,or rate of pay expected box ? if it is not stated on a job announcement

    Do a little research to find what the salary range is for the type of position and location of the job you are applying for. Try salary.com or monster resources, etc.
    Put in a range that best matches your experience level. You won't be locked into the amount you put down. You can spin it as follows .... after an interview and if they are interested... "Based on the additional info and postion requirements, responsibilities I'd be looking for compensation in the $$$$ range".
