In response to the verse in Leviticus:
The reason this law was given was because of the pagan practice of marking their bodies in rememberance of the dead. It was a pagan spiritual practice, not a Jewish one. Plus, a lot of the old testament rules were given because it was unsafe. God knew that people could get diseases from the way pork was cooked then, so he said "hey, don't eat pigs. don't even get near 'em." [that's the sierra ann paraphrase]. He also knew that nothing could be properly sterilized back then either, so he was like "hey, don't get tattoos or you'll get a disease."

Second, Revelation 19:11-16 says that Jesus will have "King of Kings and Lord of Lords" written on his thigh. I do believe this will be a permanent mark, not a sharpie mark. ;)

Also, in the New Testament, it says that everything is permissible but not beneficial. While tattoos may not be beneficial to some, it is beneficial to others who minister to the underground subcultures.
