Lust is waaay to complicated of an impulse, or emotion, or whatever you'd like to call it, to be summed up in "Arousal with/without X".

If I had to take a shot in the dark at defining it, I'd say that lust can fall anywhere between a base, purely physical desire for someone (I'm going to tend towards what I believe to be the asker's original intent and shy away from the "Something" aspect), all the way to a much deeper, less conscious and more pathological sense that having that person will somehow fix an insecurity in your own identity, self-image, social standing, etc.
In short, the latter type of lust is, in my experience, characterized by equating the object of lust with some ultimate, ideal gratification that they just can't offer.
