Each cry is different - I'm hungry, I'm lonely, I'm sick, I have gas, I need my diaper changed. Sometimes the cry is "I'm too exhausted to sleep and I can't figure out what the problem is." When you are sure that's the problem, you can let them cry. Their needs are being met. If the cry means something else, you are just teaching them that their needs will not be met.
