Help answer this question below.
Yup, this is also my dream. I'm currently on a game development course and I'm on my placement year for which I am actually learning how to set up a buisness. It's a lot of hard work and not something you can just jump in to, so I suggest if you don't yet have experience you get some books and take a course during which you will learn what software you like using.
There are a lot of different areas and software required. I have experience in 3D modelling and programming. For programming you want a compiler to run all your code, and the one you get depends on the language your using. C++ is industry standard and for that I'm using visual studio, but I originally started off using codeblocks or bloodshed dev c++ (free downloads). For 3D modelling I have experience with both 3DS Max and Maya. Personally i think Maya is better. Unfortunatley these programs are not very cheap, so you may want to find a cheaper alternative or look for a student version.
I'm sure if your dedicated and passionate enough about the industry you have a good chance at suceeding, Good luck! :)
