Help answer this question below.

If it's 'gray' rather than 'grey', then why not 'hay' rather than 'hey'?

    Welcome to the English language. Spelling is not rational. Mostly, learn the rules for spelling and the multitude of exceptions. Also use a spell checker and recheck after it.

    I think English spelling is one of the harder things about learning English as a second language. And for some people, as a first language.

    If you have a great deal of free time it is possible to look up where the word came from, which language and how it evovled.

    I once had an argument about whether girl or boy was the older word. I went to the library and looked up the history of the words.

    Girl is the older word and was initially used as a designation of a young person of either sex.
