What's the purpose? There's already a sales tax on them. Even the soda's purchased from a machine include the sales taxes in their prices, so the vendor can pay them.

The purpose was to discourage 'excessive' drinking of sodas. Legislators wanted to control people's eating and drinking habits. It's all about control.

It's not about discouraging 'excessive' drinking of sodas, or the control of eating and drinking habits in general, per se. It's about money and POWER. I'm pretty sure that's your point, having read some of your other postings.
.
If it were REALLY about effective methods of discouraging the drinking of soda, such legislation would be self-defeating: They would enact a tax to make money, people would quit or reduce their consumption of the drink, and the revenue would dwindle away, presumably to nothing. The money, and the power it represents, would just dry up.
.
People mis-manage their freedoms in this country all the f*cking time, and then have the unmitigated GALL to blame their problems on others. And this soda tax is another prime example.
.
Here's a clue to those with health issues related to drinking sodas: JUST DON'T F*CKING DO IT!
.
Not only don't we ALL not have to pay a tax then, but you also save the cost of buying sodas in the first place, plus cut the medical bills down to nothing. So instead of shelling out a sh*tload of money, you MAKE money out of the deal.

All well and good, but I still object to the social engineering I am being subjected to.
by LarryH54 on October 30th, 2009
And you have a good point there, as well.
.
My view is that I don't feel I should be made to pay for OTHER people's problems that they bring upon themselves when they voluntarily consume such products. And that's what this tax is ultimately for.
.
There's a lot to be said for personal responsibility.
