My friend's brother is 62 and can hardly walk. He has diabetes, bi-polar, and Parkinson’s disease. He falls down and hits his head. We think he should be in a nursing home. He doesn't want to go. Do you think he should? If so, how can we convince him?

Might I suggest that he start using a wheelchair? It would be cheaper than a nursing home. As long as he has all of his faculties, he should/could be fine.

If institutionalizing is still suggested by someone other than family and family's friends (say, a doctor), then consider an assisted living home. That way, he still has some control over everything, but there's someone to watch him.

However, if he wishes to remain home, and he's still got his faculties about him, you may have to consider adding whatever is necessary for him to move about the home safely, including that wheelchair. And maybe consider a paid caregiver.

Remember how much he will dislike the family for "dumping" him in a nursing home or someplace he doesn't want to go. And, if you DO convince him to go, someone should visit him for a long time each day.

Try the wheelchair, first, if you can.

    • I hope it works out for you and your family. Nursing homes are also quite expensive. If he can stay at home, it could save him and the family quite a bit of money. ;-)
