Grazing animals use more water per kilogram of food to produce than crops do (in general), especially as crops are generally annual and animals live for a number of years before they are slaughtered for food. Animals need food (which needs water to grow), water to drink, slaughtering, processing and transport. Crops need water, harvesting, processing & transport.

    • And yet why are grazing animals, like cattle, a great tool to use in terms of maintaining a healthy range land and native prairie grasses? It's much more harmful to that rangeland to turn it over for wheat production than it is to leave it be for ranchers to use for grazing cattle and encourage wildlife habitat. And I'm referring to grazing for North America, not the rainforest BS that most people associate with grazing livestock.
