What is required for a believer to realize and accept that 'what s/he believed all along is 'likely' to be a load of BS'? Courage, honesty, or both?

It's just my opinion, but I believe it is actually cowardice and self-deceit that causes this. That is, if we are speaking of a Christian.

A Christ-follower starts to fall away because it is much easier to follow the crowd and fit into the world. They begin to lie to themselves when making a conscious choice to sin because they love the temporary rewards or pleasures of this world.

After awhile, their hearts become hardened and they truly believe their own lie.

"Satan, who is the god of this world, has blinded the minds of those who don’t believe." 2 Corinthians 4:4. (But even then, thankfully, our God is a patient God and He waits for us. Many who have strayed are brought back into the fold!)

I feel that it takes more courage to be a Christ follower in this society.
