When somebody says " mind your P's and Q's" What does the P and Q stand for?

    I seem to recall from somewhere that "mind your P's and Q's" goes back to the days when handwriting was primarily learned by the upper or better educated classes. Writing was sometimes very ornate and the style of rendering made certain letters more easily mistaken for others. That is, of course, if you were educated enough to write your name or anything else.
