Your resume is intended to let prospective employers know more about you, your abilities, experience, education and achievements, as well as interests and hobbies, which help them decide, along with face to face meetings and the interview process if you will 'fit in' to their workplace and be able to perform your job efficiently.

Naturally it's a personal thing, but there are certain things that are obviously required to be included (e.g. name, address, schooling, any tertiary education if applicable etc. Age, these days, is optional, though some employers like to know). Also, if the resume looks professional it can raise their confidence in your ability to be professional in the workplace environment.

Other things worth including are any theatre groups, local clubs, organisations, sporting teams etc you belong to or have performed with, any local achievement awards or citations you have received in the past, interesting countries or states you've visited, articles you've had printed in local magazines or school periodicals and so on.

Keep it concise though, a five page essay is not what they're looking for at this stage, just a chronological listing of details relevant to the position you're applying for.

Many people, especially as they grow older and their experiences become more diverse, have two or more differing resumes optimised for a variety of kinds of jobs.

There are usually local centres, government groups and probably even hundreds of websites that can also give you pointers in creating a resume, as well as templates on applications like MS Word or ones you can download from the Net.

    Go forth...
