I'm already a Catholic but I think that many people are misunderstand what the pope has said. He is not saying that if you're not Catholic, you're automatically doomed to Hell. However, if you know that Catholicism is true and you reject it even on your death bed then yes, you are likely going to go to Hell. However, those with invincible ignorance of the Catholic Church cannot be held accountable for what they do not know. In other words, if you live in some tribe in a remote rain forest and have never even heard the name of Jesus but live your life as best you can according to what truth God has revealed to you, you will probably go to Heaven.
