Help answer this question below.
You seem to be confused about the etiquette of flatulence. One is NEVER to say "Excuse me," since flatulence is assumed to be not under one's control. Everyone is supposed to politely pretend that nothing happened. Anyone saying or doing anything to call attention to what happened is extremely rude.
I'm sure you thought placing this question in the vicinity of the elderly was some kind of humorous flatulence joke, but it isn't. The same rules apply in all groups. Period. Learn them, and that flatulence isn't something to giggle about in polite society once one is past the age of five.

Have you ever been in a situation where you let it play out but now regret not taking control?

Gosh, a trollish DR for the correct etiquette answer, according to etiquette experts. What a surprise.

Well, obviously, not too many people care about etiquette these days. I experience it all of the time here, and with clients on the phone, out shopping, etc. Some people just don't care about being "polite" anymore, and that's a shame!

WAP: I find your version of farting etiquette pretty lame. Not to sound rude but if your going to let it out, and trust me, you know its coming...its the sound & scent your not sure of.
When your around others who hear it, maybe its something worth apologizing for?!
Just my take on it.
Thanks for answering though! :)
