Would you agree with this call for the UK government to apologise (posthumously) to Alan Turing (code-breaker extraordinaire, mathematician and 'father' of computer science) for the manner in which they treated a true genius of the 20th Century?

Yes, of course. What happened to Turing was tragic, and a graphic example of the consequences of homophobia. When such nonsense is institutionalized as public policy, the government creates a long, wide mess that takes years to clean up. There's no justification for failing to do so.

    • Thanks, I agree completely. He has been more or less airbrushed out of history and it is a damned travesty. I think the tide is beginning to turn now thankfully. Still a long way to go though. We have a statue to him in Manchester and if I remember correctly not one major IT firm paid a penny towards it. Disgusting.

Hopefully lessons will be learned. :)

    • Interesting you brought this up. I was arguing with a religious homophobe the other day and mentioned the Turing case as an example of what happens when ancient prejudice isn't purged from a culture. Of course, that didn't even get a response, the train was already locked onto its tracks :)
