now if what you want is a light sabre, the biggest problem is
    1. a laser with enough power to cut things in that manner would keep traveling in a strait line, and soon you would have a mile long beam of doom and
    2. the apparatus necissary to create a laser that powerfull would fill a largeish room. the stuff is huge...

if however you wanted to have something that just looked like a light saber but didnt actualy cut things, then it could be done with a flash light. the problem is making the beam stop. since light is a wave function, perhaps something similar to a sound dampener would work? it would create a frequency exactly opposing the frequency of the saber. unfortunatly this would be useless in a cutting version of the device because even though you couldnt see the beam, it would still be continueing out invsibly. another problem with this idea is that you would need to have the opposing frequency start at the end of the device somehow... curent science doesnt have the technology to make these light dampeners but it works in theory...
