Chances of raising kids increased with length, so I shouldn't go shorter than shoulder. Beyond butt it might overshoot its target if it starts to thin out.
Even layering can be percieved as hampering health...
The shampoo commercials have it right.

Above all, long hair is a powerful mating tool.
Gay men and women are immune to the stuff. Having a more objective point of view, they care less for length.
But to straight men the length is a turn on; that's what they mean by beautiful. (explaining headscarves and updo's)
During evolution (harsh, no hospitals, no barbers) there was only 1 reason for short/bald: lack of the sustained health women need to reproduce....
Nowadays short/bald doesn't mean deadsick, but that doesn't change the way nature hardwired us. Falling in love can prove more difficult. (But over the years looks become less of an issue ;-)
