Do Christians believe that the Prophet Mohammed has importance, in the same way that Muslims believe that Jesus was an important prophet, although not the son of God?

Good question. No, Christians who understand the historicity of the Bible do not credit Mohammed with anything other than writing the Qur'an, which became the holy book of Islam. I, as a Christian, am reading the Qur'an myself to contrast it to the Bible. Honestly, the Qur'an borrows heavily from the Bible but ultimately distorts many of the historical facts. (For example, The Qur'an hijacks characters from the Bible including Abraham, Jesus, and Moses and makes them Islamic. All of history shows that Abraham, Jesus, and Moses were Jewish. The Qur'an speaks out against Jews and Christians repeatedly.)

The Qur'an was written by ONE person, in a 23 year period, over SIX CENTURIES after the last book of the Bible. The Bible was written over a 1600 year period, by over 40 authors, which included contemporaries of Jesus Himself. Which is more credible? The books that were written by those that included Jesus' followers and contemporaries. They who had personally met Jesus (including Matthew, John, Peter, and then Paul by a post-ascension appearance) wrote the New Testament. Six centuries later, Muhammad had no direct contact with Jesus.

When you read the Bible, you will see a lot of internal references to other works in the Bible. This proves consistency because the people who were documenting the history, were validating the other historical figures in Scripture (e.g., Jesus referred to Moses, Jonah; Peter referred to Paul; David who wrote the Psalms was the same David described in 1 and 2 Samuel). There are internal consistencies in the Bible, not the Qur'an-- except that the Qur'an was written by only one person.
The 40+ authors of the Bible described lands and peoples that could be validated by archaeology. the Qur'an, at best borrowed from the Bible, second-hand, and drew its own isolated conclusions.

In summary, Christians recognize the Bible as THE authentic message from God and the Qur'an as a second-hand, man-made borrowing from the Bible. No true prophet would borrow from another source, he would get his message straight from God. The Qur'an (which I am reading for myself), does not evidence anything more than a measure of (with all due respect) plagiarism from the Bible. Muhammad is a false prophet.

The Qur'an only refers to Jesus as the "son of Mary." Jesus was the Son of God as proven by His resurrection from the dead according to His own prophecy. If Muhammad were a true prophet, his prophecy about Jesus the Christ would match the prophecies of the prophets who preceeded him.

Not to mention, what was Muhammad prophesying? Jesus had already come in the flesh, been crucified, buried, and rose again. It was already foretold that Jesus would come again to judge the earth. What was Muhammad prophesying that Jesus' own testimony and prophecies had forgotten? Nothing. Jesus said and did all that He needed to and proclaimed that "it was finished." The Qur'an adds to and distorts what was already documented in the Bible.

Again, the fact that it was one man (Muhammad) writing with no one else to bear witness to what he was saying, means that his testimony is false. The Bible lives up to its own standard of two or more witnesses to establish the truth of its assertions.
