What do cicadas do while they're underground?

The eggs hatch, the larvae feed and grow through several stages, the pupae form cocoons and slowly (very clowly) develop into adults.

- Cicadas develop by "incomplete" metamorphosis. They do not go through a pupal stage or spin a coccoon.
