According to the IRS codebook, paying federal taxes is voluntary. Why aren't we told that?

    Um, does this really make sense to you? Why would there be tax evasion if paying was voluntary? What does exist, however, is that if you make under a certain amount per year then paying taxes is optional. I think the last time I checked, it was if you made less that $11,000 a year, as a single person without any dependants, then you wouldn't legally have to pay taxes. So this would account for people who are homeless, insane, or are really poor and on government assistance, etc. If you make more than this amount, then you MUST pay taxes.

    • Just a quick fact check - the amount of income below which you don't have to file is $8,750 - representing a $5,350 standard deduction and a $3,400 personal exemption for tax year 2007. If you can be claimed as a dependent (by a parent, perhaps), that number drops to simply $5,350.
