Well .. it's almost two years later from when you asked this and the taxing of cigarettes has continued to rise .. more and more and more and more.

I'm not so sure it'a a case of "the poor".

And while we're all certainly aware of the health risks and the costs of them, there seems to be a sense of "righteousness" when it comes to cigarettes that just seems .. well .. out of proportion.

If we're serious about looking at SCIENCE, then why aren't we up in arms about cigars (that we decided were "gentlemanly" and to be applauded?

What of alcohol? You know .. all those statistics about people killed by drunk drivers .. or all the health costs associated with wasted livers .. or all the lives ruined by the ravages of those "under the influence".

No .. alcohol was one prohibited .. then brought back.

No matter the sliding risk scales of cigarettes, assorted drugs, wine, alcohol .. it's only "rabid" out there about cigarettes.

There's something else at play here. Follow the money or power or "something", I presume for an anwer.

    • Yes, 2 years later and the taxes went up twice this year already. I don't know what the total taxes are on a pack of cigarettes since I don't smoke and I haven't read about it lately.
The alcohol industry must be very powerful. The state has talked about raising taxes on alcohol, but they back down each time.
The newspaper article I read 2 years ago stated that far more lower income people smoke that people who have a higher income.
