The New International Version (NIV) and King James Version (KJV) are probably the most widely used in the English language. However, as with all English translations of the original scriptures, there are translation problems. The NIV sometimes sacrifices accuracy for readability. The KJV is good as far as it goes but just doesn't take into account some more recent discoveries like the Dead Sea Scrolls and uses some antiquated English terms that actually have different meanings in modern usage.

I would recommend either the New American Standard Bible (NASB) or the English Standard Version (ESV) for a good balance between readability and textual accuracy. There are plenty of sites on the web that compare English translations, and these two consistently come out on top.

Just don't forget that all versions have some translation problems, and it is helpful to use more than one when studying.

The New American Bible is the Catholicized Bible and anyone who uses it should understand that bias is there in terms of the translation, footnotes, and table of contents.

    • Suggest either Douay-Rheims or New American Bible if you want one that has all the books that the "reformers" too out.

    • Eric, it should be noted here that the "Catholicized" as you call it New American Bible (NAB) is used by 1.2 billion Catholics that would disagree with you. so know that you are in the minority of people with that opinion. FYI, all bibles no matter what language are going to have differences no one particular bible will be "biased". They are all sightly different. Many have not been updated for Years. The NAB and the NIV both have 2011 versions. The only significant bible that gets a lot of use I would be wary of is the King James because it was written 400 years ago by englishmen who did not have access to very complete Greek and Hebrew translation. Also, since that time 1000's of documents have been discovered that should be considered when translating the bible from it's original languages.
