The people of Somalia are not perpetrating these piracies and therefore should not be punished. It's heavy-handed use of the military like you seem to advocate here that has diminished American influence around the world and helped to hurt it economically. The pirates have no political allegiance to Somalia and can change bases to anywhere anytime, will not be seriously affected by a blockade, and have demonstrated that they can get most anything they need on the hight seas including their very own supertanker and food supply ships. There is an international effort underway to deal with them surgically and rationally.

I believe that it is no accident that this latest ship to be taken is part of the largest merchant fleet in the world which happen to also be the largest US flagged fleet in the world (Maersk Lines, formerly based in Copenhagen, Denmark, now out of Norfolk, VA) and manned by US merchant marines (could they have other training or come from special military backgrounds?). The calm, rational dialogue coming off that ship in phone conversations as quoted in the newspapers did not sound like they were coming from average civilian personnel that had just lost their captain to pirates. This may be a well-planned set up to get operations underway and prepare the public for subsequent events.
