The Iranians who captured the Royal Navy personnel have offered to let the only female crew member go. Does that count as sexism, and if yes, against the female officer, or her male companions?

I haven't seen that the Iranians are prepared to let Turney go, but then I've only checked the bbc website today. Even if they haven't agreed to let her go, I'm answering the question because there is definitely a subtext to the reporting of the crisis, that it is something to do with gender equality.

Suppose the Iranians are releasing Turney purely becuase she is a woman; say because they feel she is less able to cope with being imprisoned or should be allowed to go home to her family; then I'd say as it's based on ideas of sex roles it's as good as sexism. But because the phrase "sexism" is usually used to describe an opinion against some group or to benefit another, than I agree it's really hard to say that this case is sexism against someone- it's both against the woman but in her benefit, like when women object to having the door held open for them.
