ABS or Anti-lock Braking works by making your brake pads grip and release the disc hundreds of times a second. this doesn't give the wheel a channce to lock up and skid, so it grips the road to slow the car. In an emergency just stomp the brake and the ABS will do the rest. If your car isn't equipped with ABS and you feel the wheels lock up you should pulse your brakes so that you maintain traction, although there almost always isn't enough time. In my opinion ABS is one of the greatest developments in car safety.
