A common misconception. Atheists don't believe in Deities. That is the sum total you can claim about a person who has told you that s/he is an Atheist. After all, "theism" refers to belief in Deities alone, while "a-theism" means the only belief Atheists don't have is "belief in Deities."

Atheists can quite easily believe in other things. Just not in Deities.
