Depending on your sources... ie the official or real explanation, either nothing happened (official) or, more accurately the real explanation that students at the time held a typical student protest in the square against the government, as students around the world are expected to do. The difference at this protest, is that the military waded in with tanks and guns to disperse the students. As one would expect, the students lay down in front of the tanks to stop them. What happened next is the reason people remark on Tiananmen Square... the tanks proceded to crush the students, who really didn't believe that the military would respond in such a way. Chaos ensued with students trying to flee, but they found themselves trapped as the army continued to shoot, maim and kill the students who had not actually done any wrong. There was worldwide horror at the incident, which is why the whole incident was denied by the government: all reports in papers and media in the country was removed, as were references in historical writings, tour guides etc. It was as if it never happened... at least that was the official stance. I'm not sure if it is still that way today, but even so, the video footage and photos were broadcast around the world as they happened, and remain a powerful memory that I and others will never forget (along with 9/11, Challenger and the fall of the Berlin Wall etc). I'm not sure of the historical details, but this is what I witnessed.
