There is no set rubric on how many Hail Marys, Our Fathers, etc. a priest will give you. It depends entirely upon the priest himself. Some priests like to give you 5 Our Fathers, some might ask of you to do 3 Our Fathers and 2 Hail Marys for the same sin.

    • Penance is not as important as Absolution...but still part. It does vary and may not even be prayers, but good works maybe.

    • Most priests today do not require rattling off so many routine prayers, but give a Bible reading, praying for certain issues, acts of charity, service as Nohbdy said above, getting kids to do chores, write love-letters to parents or siblings. The repentance phase involves getting rid of 'character defects", trying not to do the same sin again by seriously working on the sin/fault with the Grace of Jesus from the sacrament within oneself and those whom one has offended.
