You're reading How does a priest determine how many Hail Mary's one has to say after committing a sin?

Penance is not as important as Absolution...but still part. It does vary and may not even be prayers, but good works maybe.

Most priests today do not require rattling off so many routine prayers, but give a Bible reading, praying for certain issues, acts of charity, service as Nohbdy said above, getting kids to do chores, write love-letters to parents or siblings. The repentance phase involves getting rid of 'character defects", trying not to do the same sin again by seriously working on the sin/fault with the Grace of Jesus from the sacrament within oneself and those whom one has offended.
