Are we at the height of civilization?

    Depends what you mean by height. In terms of potential we are to what we could be as a three year old toddler is to a wise old man. We have the potential to travel between the stars and spread a civilization of peace, wisdom, and understanding throughtout this galaxy and beyond. We could grow to a point where we could be in contact with alien civilisations and even form an interstellar community. So from this perspective we are not anywhere near the height of civilization.
    However in terms of our current situation, we are at the height of the oil based civilisation, or maybe just passed. Our civilisation is economically driven, with oil as a major factor. Given that peak oil production has passed and that we shown no signs of adopting different technologies on the scale required to sustain our current levels of growth and consumption, then we have passed the height and have 30 years at best to change our priorities , ie abandon our dependence on oil and our quest for ever increasing levels of economic growth with requires un sustainable levels of resource consumption. If we can do that, we will rise from where we are today, to heights that are beyond our comprehension, but exist for us as potential nevertheless.
    There is also a model in the book by Michio Kaku (Hyperspace) of Type 0,I, II and III civilisations.
    We are Type 0 - ie we can not yet muster the energies of our own planet in a way that does not threaten our survival.
    A Type I civilisation can muster the energy of its own star, to provide limitless energies for space travel, planetary colonisation , etc.
    A type II civilisation could use the energy of and colonise and entire galaxy, thus mastering interstellar travel.
    A type III civilsation can use the enrgy of the entire universe, harness the power of black holes, traverse the universe at will and possibly live as long as the universe itself.

    • I've heard of Michio's 3 types of civilizations. There's still one thing I don't understand though. What will happen to a type 0 civilization when a type 3 awaits its transition to type 1?
