Why do dogs wipe their feet on the grass (ie. kick up grass) after they go to the bathroom?

    Dogs are territorial and they believe that the "world" belongs to them. After they defecate, they scratch the ground to spread the scent of their feces and tell other dogs that this area belongs to him/her. If you watch a dog, especially one that is dominate, they will urinate and "cover" another dogs urine scent, even in the presence of the previous dog. I had a beagle/terrier that was dominate. He would "cover" my other dog's urine (sometimes before she finished LOL) even in his own backyard. It was his way of staying the alpha dog over her.

    • It's basically a territorial thing going on. My dogs do that all the time and it's completely normal,
