Charles Darrow first published Monopoly by hand in the 1930's, and later sold it to Parker Brothers. However, it is believed that he was merely reproducing a game he had learned to play that was passed around in a non-commercial fashion. The game could have come from the game "Finance" created by Daniel W. Layman in the 1920's, but even that can be traced back further to a game called "The Landlord's Game" created by Lizzie Magie in 1904. Since the game was handed down from person to person and hand-created by different people through the years, variations occurred making exact origins hard to trace. But Magie's game has many of the elements that make their way into later variations, including Darrow's version.
