Can't stop this dry raspy cough, any hints apart from honey or cough medicine.?

Boil a pot of water and inhale the steam. Or go take a hot shower.

- I don't know what else to tell you. You may just have to live with it untill you can get medicine. You may want to go see the doctor.

I've had a cough that has lasted for about a year now. It comes and it goes. Somedays I don't feel the need to cough at all, while other days I cannot stop. I'm not a smoker. Could this be a sign of something serious or is it just allergies?
