Weight loss involves a combination of two things:

    1. Increasing the amount of calories one burns, and

    2. Decreasing one's caloric intake.

The maximum health benefit is derived from combining both of these. I you are currently not exercising at all, then increasing to twice a week while decreasing, or not increasing, your caloric intake will lead to weight loss. The cardiovascular health benefits would also be there, though not to the maximal effect. It is generally recommended that one exercise 3-4 times per week, but anything is better than nothing. So get out there and do it!
